Survey Results

For the past year, we have conducted an anonymous online survey about pelvic pain and its effects on relationships. There was a Women’s survey and a Partner survey. The survey was closed out on January 1, 2008. Below are some of the current significant statistics from the survey. These are a few preliminary statistics. Full results and the comments within the survey will be used in our book, “Secret Suffering: How Women’s Sexual Pain Affects Their Relationships.”

Women’s Survey Results

  •  48% have experienced pain for over five years
  • 32% (highest percentage) are women between 21 and 30
  • 41% consider the pain severe
  • 74% describe one symptom as burning
  • 58% says they have sex less than they used to
  • 30% are less emotionally intimate
  • 68% say intercourse hurts
  • 51% of women say they continue with intercourse even when it hurts
  • 71% say these conditions make them feel depressed/despondent
  • 41% have seen five or more healthcare providers
  • 63% were overall unsatisfied with the care they received from healthcare providers

Partner’s Survey Results

  • 73% say they feel badly for her
  • 86% say their partner asks or tells them to stop if it hurts during sex
  • 54% are disappointed
  • 83% says this issue won’t cause their relationship to end
